Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — December 28, 2024
Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), The Policy Studies Institute (PSI), and the Center for Governance and Intra-Africa Trade Studies (CGIATS) jointly organized a consultative workshop on the flotation of the Ethiopian Birr and its economic implications. Held at the Capital Hotel and Spa in Addis Ababa, the event brought together leading economists, policymakers, and stakeholders to examine the macroeconomic impacts of Ethiopia’s recent currency reform and discuss strategies for managing the transition effectively.
Organized as a precursor to the January 2025 experts’ conference, the workshop provided a platform to review lessons learned since the currency flotation, focusing on challenges, opportunities, and forward-looking solutions. Opening remarks were delivered by key figures, including H.E. Mr. Teferi Tiyaru, Director General PSI; Professor Tassew Woldehanna, President of the EEA; and Dr. Seife Tadelle, Director of the CGIATS.
Over the past months, Ethiopia has witnessed profound economic shifts following the flotation of its currency. The workshop provided a platform for experts to discuss critical themes such as exchange rate dynamics, inflationary trends, current account adjustments, and the implications of real exchange rate misalignment on economic growth. Presentations from Dr. Nasir Yenus, Dr. Alekaw Kebede, Dr. Tewolde Girma and Teklebirhan Alemnew offered data-driven insights into the post-reform economic landscape.
The workshop also emphasized actionable outcomes, including drafting policy briefs, and identifying priority agendas for the upcoming January conference. This event marks a significant step in Ethiopia’s journey toward sustainable macroeconomic reform and its broader integration into African economic governance frameworks.
As the workshop concluded, participants highlighted the essential role of collaborative efforts in addressing Ethiopia’s economic challenges. They also stressed the importance of establishing regular platforms for dialogue, acknowledging their critical contribution to fostering unity and sustained engagement among experts and policymakers working toward Ethiopia’s economic progress.
