In this paper the historical development of agricultural education and manpower training in Ethiopian institutions of higher learning specializing in agriculture and related fields is reviewed. The review reveals that agricultural manpower training began in the early 1950s and that, at present, the country has seven institutions of higher learning which trains students in agriculture and related fields. The study shows that a host of factors have put a stranglehold on the training and professional competence of agricultural graduates. Moreover, there is a widening gap between the country’s existing limited capacity to train agricultural manpower and ever increasing demand for such manpower. The paper also reveals that the scarcity of highly qualified agricultural professionals, with bachelor’s degree and above, has been accentuated and intensified through time
