By using primary data from 200 households (466 children), gathered by a structured questionnaire in Wolkite town, the paper examines whether there is any trade‐off between child labor hours and child schooling outcomes. Both descriptive and econometric analyses were used. In the descriptive analysis, from the total sample size 41 percent of children lag behind from educational attainment of which 30 percent are those children who are in work only category, 8 percent in work and school category, 3 percent from inactive category whereas it is only 1 percent who lag behind in school only category. In the econometric analysis a unit increase in age of the child, age of the household head, number of infants and household size lead to a more than 1 unit increase of child time allocation to combine school with work or to fall in work only category instead of school only category which in turn lowers educational attainment of the child. On the other hand, parental education, welfare status of the household and quality of education lowers the probability of the child time allocation in working only category and as a result increases educational attainment of the child. Finally, this study has found that if children’s average working hours are below the threshold level of 23.5 h per week, then education is not affected. But in the study area the average working hours (25.5) is above the threshold level of 23.5 h per week. This suggests implementing policies that raise per capita income for the poor households, raising education of parents and improving the quality of education.
