Without cooperation, a developed society would not have existed. However, cooperation is not easy to maintain. Authentic cooperation is difficult in the world of prisoners’ dilemma, tragedy of commons and free-riding problems. Furthermore, cooperation is difficult in low trust societies. Cooperatives may help to solve the dilemma of collective action. Using game theory as a tool of analysis, this paper discusses the role of cooperation and cooperatives in socio-economic development of nations
