Poor child nutrition continues to plague a disproportionately large number of children in Ethiopia compared to most other countries. Effective policies and programs to alleviate malnutrition require an understanding of the underlying determinants. Using a logistic framework, the study examined the determinants of child nutritional status using the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data, 2005. Most of the findings from the empirical analysis buttress and extend the findings of previous research in the field. Results of the econometric analysis in various model specifications confirm that the predominant attributes that determine the nutritional status of children indicated by wasting and stunting in Ethiopia were found to be child characteristics, maternal education and other maternal traits, and the economic status of the household. Access to the media through radio has a stronger impact in the rural areas. So, improvement of the socio-economic status of the principal child caretakers, who are mostly mothers, could go a long way towards improving the nutritional status of children. The results of the analyses also show that strategies aimed at reducing the pervasiveness of wasting and stunting will benefit from an improvement of the living standards, and from an increase in the education levels of parents and future parents. Strategies that improve the quality of the existing health facilities will also contribute positively to nutritional outcome. Another interesting finding is the effect of size of children on child nutritional status which implies an interesting policy option through population policy that could reduce the number of off springs in the household.
