This study attempts to bring the issue of rural youth out-migration to the research and policy agenda. Increasing rural population in Ethiopia posed the challenge of acquiring farm land or a diminishing land size for the youth as compared to previous generations. The study attempts to shed some light on the linkages between youth migration and the fertility situation of the migrant sending households. This study uses rural household data collected from West Gojjam (in Amhara region) and Wolaitta zones (in SNNP region), which were found to be the main source areas of youth in-migrants of Addis Ababa based on a rapid mapping survey. The approach the study used is mainly descriptive. The study found differences in different characteristics of households both across location and between migrant sending households and those households that do not have any member migrated out. The characteristics that these differences are noted include household wealth, household headship, household size, fertility and fertility preference, contraceptive knowledge, awareness and practice
