EEA-ATI Validation Workshop Unveils Paths for Agricultural Development in Ethiopia

Agricultural experts, policymakers, and stakeholders converged at the Haile Resort in Adama for a significant validation workshop centered on two pivotal studies: ‘Institutional Frameworks and Structural Setup for Pluralistic Agricultural Extension and Advisory Service (PAEAS)’ and ‘Institutional, Policy and Regulatory Analysis to Enabling the Business of Agriculture in Ethiopia.’ The workshop, held on April 4th, aimed to chart the course for agricultural development in the nation.

The day commenced with a sense of purpose as participants engaged in the registration process led by the Agricultural Transformation Initiative (ATI) and the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA). Mr. Reta Wagary, the Director of Agricultural Policy Study, set the tone by introducing the comprehensive program ahead.

In a warm welcoming address, Prof. Mengistu Ketema, CEO of the EEA, expressed optimism about the workshop’s potential impact on Ethiopia’s agricultural landscape. “These studies provide a roadmap, a blueprint for us to follow as we navigate the complexities of agricultural development,” Prof. Mengistu remarked.

The workshop was honored to have H.E Dr. Meles Mekonnen, State Minister of Agriculture and Horticulture sector, Ministry of Agriculture, deliver the opening remarks. Dr. Mekonnen emphasized the critical role of such studies in guiding policy decisions for sustainable agricultural growth.

The spotlight then turned to the insightful presentations, beginning with Dr. Lamessa Tariku’s deep dive into the ‘Institutional Frameworks and Structural Set up for Pluralistic Agricultural Extension and Advisory Service (PAEAS).’ Dr. Lamessa shed light on the essential structures needed to support diverse agricultural extension services across the nation. Following this, Dr. Abule Mehare took the stage to present the findings of the ‘Institutional, Policy and Regulatory Analysis to Enabling the Business of Agriculture in Ethiopia.’ His presentation explored the policy nuances required to foster a conducive environment for agricultural business growth, responsible agricultural investment, and ways to transform small holder farmers to agribusiness.

The workshop’s heart lay in the enriching discussions and answers that ensued, led by the engaged participants. H.E Dr. Meles Mekonnen and Prof. Mengistu Ketema skillfully moderated this session, encouraging diverse perspectives and actionable insights. In his closing remarks, Dr. Mandefro Nigussie, Chief Executive Officer, the ATI, highlighted the workshop’s significance in steering Ethiopia towards agricultural prosperity. “These studies are not mere reports; they are our guideposts for progress,” Dr. Mandefro emphasized.
