The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) in Collaboration with TechnoSocio Advisory LLC, Colorado, USA, provided a half day seminar for its members and key partners on “Machine Learning Basics: Challenges ahead to use machine learning for developmental aims” on December 5, 2023 at EEA training hall. TechnoSocio Advisory is a firm that offers consulting services at the intersection of machine learning, social inclusion, and international development. The main aim of the seminar was to create partnership, foster knowledge sharing and exchange experience with researchers, practitioners, post graduate students and partners. About 25 participants (10 females) from private and public sector, financial institutions, Universities, research institutions, EEA staff and EEA members attended the seminar.
The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Amdissa Teshome, the President of the EEA, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of the topic. The keynote speaker, Dr. Emily Springer from TechnoSocio, gave an insightful presentation on the basic concepts of machine learning, the methods of training algorithms, and the challenges of applying machine learning in development contexts. The participants were introduced to the field of regenerative Artificial Intelligence and its implications for women and underrepresented groups in international development. The seminar was highly participatory and interactive learning process in which participants asked questions and contributed to simulation exercise using ChatGPT.
In his concluding remark, Dr. Amdissa Teshome, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Emily for her voluntary contribution and presentation of the relevant topic; and participants for their time; and EEA staff who organized the event.
