The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), in collaboration with the Fredrich Ebert Stiftung, had organized a half day public dialogue forum on the current local and international challenges facing the State of the Ethiopian economy: envisaging a way-forward on July 7, 2022 at NEXUS hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. About 70 invited participants from ministerial offices, academia, research institutes, international organizations, private sector, CSOs and EEA members attended the forum.
The forum was started with a brief opening speech by Mengistu Ketema (Prof), CEO of EEA. Prominent economists Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse (PhD) from IFPRI, Alemayehu Geda (Prof) from Addis Ababa University, and Endalkachew Seme from the Private sector, made speeches on the thematic topic. Following the presentations, fruitful discussion was made. Prof Belay Kassa moderated the session. The workshop emphasized on the past, present and future Ethiopian economic challenges and implied alternative policy options. Mr. Endalkachew Seme presented about the historical development of the private sector and identified the key impediments in Ethiopia. Alemayehu Geda presented Macroeconomic instability problems of the Ethiopian economy. Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse presented the economic effect of reducing the subsidies on fuel and fertilizer in Ethiopia. Participants raised questions, and provided comments and suggestions, and the speakers reflected on the questions raised by the participants. Mengistu Ketema finally made a closing remark. In his conclusion, Mengistu appreciated the organizers, speakers, and participants for their active participation. He also recognized and appreciated the FES for co-organizing the forum. Finally, Mengistu promised the audience to organize similar policy public dialogues at national levels in the near future.
