The Ethiopian Economic Association (EEA) provided the first ever coaching & mentoring (M&C) training for its members. The association continuously responds to the growing needs of members for technical skills but has not addressed the personal development or life skills aspects that include entrepreneurial and business development skills, training facilitation (adult learning) methodological skills, coaching & mentoring (C&M) skills, leadership and management skills.
Coaching & Mentoring training will enable EEA members play active role in the affairs of the Association such as participation in conferences, workshops, and volunteer as and when the Association needs them.
The goal of the training is to institutionalize a coaching and mentoring system within EEA that members can access as and when they need it. The platform will create ‘critical masses of coaches and mentors. EEA invited interested members to apply for the M&C training. Over 250 members expressed interest and registered. These were clustered into 8 cohorts. About 25 members (2 female) attended the first training on Oct 21, 2023. The training began with a discussion on the effectiveness of trainings at national and institutional levels. It was concluded that training is not enough to achieve the desired goal of professional development. There is a need for continuous coaching and mentoring. Participants were then introduced to the concepts, skills and models of coaching and mentoring. At the end, the trainees were given activities to be completed with online follow and support by the facilitators. A Telegram Channel is established for this purpose.
Up on accomplishment of the activities, Certificate of Completion will be provided to each participant. The second round C&M training will be provided on October 28, 2023. Sileshi Ashine & Amdissa Teshome, president of the EEA were the training facilitators.
