Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – September 18, 2024 – The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) has published a new policy working paper titled “Poverty and Pro-Poor Growth in Ethiopia.” The study critically examines policies and programs aimed at poverty reduction and assesses their intended outcomes. Utilizing data from the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS), the paper evaluates shifts in poverty and inequality between 2015/16 and 2021/22.
The key findings reveal a concerning rise in absolute poverty across several regions, alongside growing income inequality. Additionally, the study highlights a disconnect between policy design and its implementation in some areas. The report urges the adoption of a more effective poverty reduction strategy, calling for better-aligned policies, increased investment in pro-poor social sectors, and stronger monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
