Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – On July 19, 2024, the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA)
successfully hosted its 21st International Conference. The event focused on stimulating
discussions around critical economic issues.
Dr. Lemma Gudisa, Vice President of the EEA, warmly welcomed attendees, setting the stage for
the day’s deliberations. Following opening remarks by Professor Beyene Petros, Director General
of the Policy Studies Institute of Ethiopia, a high-level panel discussion on “Capital Market
Development in Ethiopia: Challenges and Prospects” took center stage.
The conference’s centerpiece was a high-level panel discussion on “Capital Market Development
in Ethiopia: Challenges and Prospects.” Distinguished panelists, including Dr. Brook Taye,
Director General of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority, Dr. Tilahun Esmael Kassahun, CEO
of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, and Mr. Awoke Asfaw representing the private sector,
shared their insights on the potential and challenges of developing Ethiopia’s capital markets.
The discussion, moderated by Dr. Tewodros Makonnen, generated robust dialogue among
attendees, underscoring the critical importance of this sector.
In addition to the panel discussion, Dr. Degye Goshu presented on aggregate output and
productive capacities, while Dr. Solomon Zena shed light on the impact of large-scale land
transactions on local communities. These presentations provided valuable insights into key
economic indicators and their implications.
