Ethiopian Economics Association Holds 31st General Assembly

Addis Ababa, 29 September 2024 — The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) successfully held its 31st General Assembly on Sunday, 29 September 2024, at the EEA Conference Hall in Addis Ababa. The event brought together distinguished economists, researchers, and policymakers from across the country, reflecting the EEA’s continuous commitment to fostering research and policy dialogue.

The program commenced with a welcoming address from Professor. Tassew Woldehanna, President of the EEA, moderated by Dr. Berhanu Denu. Prof. Tassew highlighted the significant achievements of the EEA over the past year and reiterated the Association’s role in influencing economic discourse in Ethiopia.

A highlight of the assembly was the Award Ceremony, where four distinguished students were recognized for their exceptional academic achievements. The Mekonnen Tadesse Award, the Eshetu Chole Award, and the Wolday Amha Award were presented to students who demonstrated outstanding performance in their Essays, Theses, and Dissertations, as evaluated against the objective criteria outlined in EEA’s award and recognition guideline.

The General Assembly also featured the launch of a new book titled, “Economic Policy Research and the Culture of Policy Dialogue in Ethiopia: EEA’s 30-Year Journey 1991-2023.” The publication showcases the Association’s enduring efforts to promote economic research and engage in constructive policy dialogues. The launch was followed by presentations and discussions.

The program continued with a presentation on “how the Ethiopian economy responds to exchange rate reforms?” by Dr. Degye Goshu. This presentation sparked an engaging discussion among participants about the impacts of recent economic policies in Ethiopia.

In addition to the scholarly discussions, the assembly attended to crucial administrative matters, including the presentation of the Audit Report for 2023/24 by an external auditor and the Annual Performance Report by EEA’s CEO, Professor Mengistu Ketema. Attendees also participated in approving the upcoming year’s plan, the election of an electoral committee, and the selection of a new external auditor.

The event concluded with a closing remark from Professor. Tassew, who expressed gratitude to all attendees for their participation and contributions to the continued success of the Association.

Participants were invited to network over lunch, bringing the General Assembly to a close.
