External Announcement to Recruit a Part-time Licensed Legal Advisor

Introduction

Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) is a non-profit, non-partisan, and independent research and membership organization in Ethiopia. Its objectives are undertaking evidence-based analysis (research) on evolving socioeconomic realities; organizing forums for creating chances of discussing policy issues; building capacities of its members and other stakeholders; disseminating outputs through various channels; rendering membership services; and promoting the study of economics in the country’s educational institutions and beyond.

Currently, EEA has three functional units/divisions (Research and Policy Analysis, Partnership and Communications, and Administration and Finance) under its non-profit wing and an Income Generating Activity (IGA) wing. The Association requires to employ a legal advisor who would deliver legal services on a part-time basis as specified below.

Job Summary/Responsibilities

In consultation with the EEA’s Executive Directors and the Management, the legal advisor shall provide legal advisory services on a part-time basis shouldering the following responsivities.

  • Provide EEA management and the Executive Committee with timely and accurate legal advice on a range of subjects (e.g., CSO proclamations, labor law, commercial law, and the likes)
  • Review and give advice on internal governance policies and guidelines and regularly monitor compliance.
  • Review, evaluate and advise on different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations.
  • Provide advice to EEA on effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible/emerging legal issues.
  • Review and solidify agreements, contracts and other legal documents to ensure the EEA’s full legal rights.
  • Provide clarification on legal terminologies or specifications that are pertinent to the EEA and its Staff;
  • Support EEA management and the executive committee to have up-to-date information on changes to laws and proclamations.
  • Support EEA in investigation of frauds, misconducts, commission of disciplinary offences, and the likes.
  • Institute, defend, appeal, respond intervene, plead, interplead, oppose or act in any manner whatsoever, in any suit by or against involving the interest of EEA in any court, quasi-judicial, tribunal arbitral or other proceedings.
  • Present regularly written progress reports on cases at hand.
  • Other related activities assigned by the President and the CEO of the EEA.

Job Requirements

  • LLM from accredited Law school.
  • Minimum of ten years of practical experience in providing advisory services in the legal area for business organizations and NGOs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create legal response with defensive or proactive strategies.
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Sound judgement and ability to analyze situations and information.

Terms

Part-time basis (partly with physical presence and partly online/e-mail and via telephone). The job will be for one year with a possibility of extension based on performances and availability of funds.

Salary and Benefits

  • The Association will pay a gross of ETB 15,000 (Fifteen thousand Birr only) per month.
  • Additionally, when there is a legal case, she/he will be compensated 8% (Eight percent) of the amount involved in the litigation.
