The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) held a Public Lecture on August 01, 2023 at the
EEA. Dr. Fadhel Kaboub an Associate Professor of economics at Denison University (Ohio,
USA) and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity made the public lecture
at the EEA conference hall. About 30 participants attended the public lecture. The public lecture
was titled “Economic Possibilities for Ethiopia: From Structural Deficiencies to Resilience
and Prosperity”. Dr. Fadhel in his lecture addressed about the structural economic deficiencies
due to three root causes (energy deficit, food deficit and low value-added industrialization)
which trapped the development of the less developing countries.
Dr. Fadhel also showed that the net result of the neocolonial wealth extraction is over $2 trillion
from the Global South to Global North every year. Based on the findings, he recommend Africa
should promote massive structural transformation through the Pan-African Cooperation for
strategic investments in food sovereignty, renewable energy sovereignty and high value-added
industrial policies as the means to break the vicious circle of the development trap. Participants
raised pertinent questions, comments and suggestions and he gave explanations on the questions.
Dr. Tadele Ferede from AAU was a moderator who also concluded the session by thanking all
the attendants including the presenter, Dr. Fadhel Kaboub, for presenting such a highly
important presentation. Dr. Tadele also requested the EEA to continue organizing similar events.
Prof Mengistu Ketema, the CEO of the EEA appreciated Dr. Fadhel Kaboub for sharing his
experiences and promised to organize similar events in the future.
