International Conference on Ethiopian Birr Floatation Continues with Second Panel Discussion

Addis Ababa, January 23, 2025 – The first day of the momentous International Conference on the Flotation of the Ethiopian Birr and Its Economic Implications continued with the second panel discussion, titled Challenges and Opportunities of Currency Floatation.

This insightful session followed empirical paper presentations by senior researchers, including Dr. Nasir Yunus (EEA), Dr. Tewolde Girma, and Dr. Alekaw Kebede (PSI), who analyzed various dimensions of the Ethiopian Birr floatation. Their presentations provided a solid empirical foundation for the ensuing discussions, covering topics such as macroeconomic stability, fiscal impacts, and regional policy comparisons.

Moderated by Dr. Hailu Elias, Dean of the College of Business and Economics at Addis Ababa University, the second panel discussion featured a distinguished lineup: Dr. Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse (IFPRI), Dr. Tigist Zelalem Asmare (Bahir Dar University), Tewodros Hailu (Banking Sector Expert), and Professor Njuguna Ndung’u, former Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya.

The panel delved into the challenges and opportunities of transitioning to a floating currency regime. Topics included managing inflationary risks, preparing institutions for market-driven exchange rates, and leveraging the floatation for enhanced trade competitiveness. Drawing from Ethiopia’s context and regional experiences, the panel emphasized the importance of sound fiscal management, robust policy frameworks, and institutional readiness to navigate the complexities of currency reform.

Hana W/Kidan and Binyam Agegn served as rapporteurs, documenting the critical insights and actionable recommendations from the session.

With more panels, expert presentations, and dialogues lined up, the conference set to run through January 24 continues to deliver impactful discussions on Ethiopia’s economic future.
