The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) held a media conference on December 21, 2023 at its conference hall focusing on findings of a research titled “Does Ethiopia Benefit from Joining the BRICS? Perceptions and Global Trends”. The research was conducted by the EEA research team: Dr. Degye Goshu Dr. Amdissa Teshome and Mr. Dawit Teshle. About 11 National and International mainstreaming and print media representatives and journalists took part in the event. These include the Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, Ethiopian Broadcasting Service, Hagere Television, Sheger FM 102.1, Voice of America, Ethio FM 107.8, Menaharia radio, Reporter Newsletter, Capital Newsletter, BBC Amharic, and Tikvah Ethiopia telegram group.
The conference was officially open by a welcoming remark by Prof. Mengistu Ketema, the CEO of the EEA. In his remark Prof. Mengistu, expressed his appreciation to the media representatives for taking part in this timely issue. In his remark the CEO also indicated EEA’s continuous commitment in organizing similar platforms in the areas of national interest.
The principal investigator of the study, Dr. Degye Goshu presented key findings of the study. The results of the study were mainly based on secondary data and a perception survey of 233 EEA members (Economists) around the globe. The presenter clearly pointed out the global trends, realization of the objectives of the New International Economic Order (NIEO), and the driving forces for a new global economic order, the possible political and economic consequences of joining the BRICS. During the question-and-answer session, Dr. Degye made clarifications to questions posed by various media representatives and indicated areas of research interest on similar issues.
