Honorary Member Criteria

Increasing the size of membership of different categories (full or associate member) from various disciplines is one of the duties of the Association. However, little has been done in the selection of honorary members. Those entitled for this category of membership are those who have made a significant contribution to the development of the society or those who are distinguished in their area of business, profession or life experience. The Association believes that the recognition of these people as members will enable it to share their valuable expertise and life experience.

To this end, the Association has established a committee composed of three members to set criteria for the selection of honorary members. Accordingly, the Committee has established the following criteria for nomination of honorary members.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominees for Honorary membership can be selected from any segment of the society. To qualify for membership, the Nominee should be
  • A person who has made a substantial contribution to the society (in social or economic aspects) and is recognized by the Society for his contributions
  • One who has highest academic recognition?
  • Highly recognized for his /her creative activities
  • One who has made visible contribution to the development of the country; by way of participation in investment activities; creation of employment, introduction of innovative technologies etc.
  • Recognized for excellence in his/her area of profession
  • Highly interested and is ready to promote the mission, vision and objectives of the Association.

Reward and Recognition Guideline

The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) awards the Eshetu Chole Memorial Award for the best Master’s thesis and the Mekonnen Tadesse Memorial Award for the best Bachelor’s essay among economics students in public higher learning institutions. Winners receive financial and non-financial support. The EEA also recognizes individuals and partner institutions for their contributions with material awards like gold pins, crystals, and certificates. However, the selection process has been subjective without clear guidelines. The EEA plans to extend awards to Doctoral theses and has prepared a guideline to address these shortcomings

Objectives of the Guidelines

  • The aim of this guidelines is to establish clear criteria for selection of best students, individuals and institutions for awards and recognitions. The guidelines have the following specific objectives
  • Establish clear and transparent criteria for selection of the best Bachelor essay, Masters’ thesis, and Doctoral dissertation winners
  • Develop clear, precise and objective criteria for selection and recognition of individual/s
  • Develop clear, transparent and objective criteria for selection and recognition of partner institutions
  • To define the type and amount of awards and recognitions.

Types and Amount of Awards

Best Students’ Award
  • First and second-best doctoral dissertation winners of the Wolday Amha Memorial Award shall be awarded ETB 7000 and 5000, respectively.
  • First and second-best thesis winners of Eshetu Chole Memorial Award shall be awarded ETB 5000 and 3500, respectively.
  • The first and second-best Bachelor essay winners of Mekonnen Tadesse Memorial Award shall be awarded ETB 3500 and 2500, respectively.
  • The selected essays, theses and dissertations shall be published on the EEA’s website.
  • Certificate of recognition shall be awarded to the winners.
  • Advisors of the students shall also be mentioned during the award ceremony.

Awards to Individuals

  • Each year, two individuals shall be awarded for: 1) best economics teaching and research, and 2) significant contribution to the advancement of the EEA. The winners shall be offered crystal cap or hand watch and certificate with a jury report.

Awards to Institutions

  • Institutions that significantly contributed to the achievements of the EEA’s mission shall be recognized. Selected institutions shall be awarded certificate of recognition with a jury report.
  • For all the above three categories
  • Travel expenses (including accommodation, transportation and two days perdiem) of winners while coming to receive the awards shall be covered by the EEA.
  • The EEA management may revise the amount and types of awards and present it to the EC for approval.
