International Conference on Ethiopian Birr Floatation Kicks Off in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, January 23, 2025 – The much-anticipated International Conference on the Flotation of the Ethiopian Birr and Its Economic Implications commenced today at the Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa. Jointly Organized by the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), Policy Studies Institute, and the Center for Governance and Intra-Africa Trade Studies (CGIATS). The event gathered economists, policymakers, and financial experts, to deliberate on one of Ethiopia’s most significant economic reforms.

The opening session set an engaging tone, beginning with Dr. Seife Tadelle, CGIATS Director, who delivered insightful introductory remarks. This was followed by a welcoming speech by Professor Tassew Woldehanna, President of the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), who emphasized the critical role of rigorous research and dialogue in shaping effective economic policies. The keynote speech by Mr. Abie Sano, President of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), highlighted the timeliness and significance of this conference. He stressed this moment presents a vital opportunity to shape reforms that can spur economic stability, growth, and global competitiveness. H.E. Fekadu Tsega, Director General of the Policy Studies Institute (PSI), also delivered a powerful opening remark , urging stakeholders to approach this complex reform with a balanced and evidence-based perspective.

The opening session was followed by a dynamic and inspiring expert panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Berhanu Denu. Panelists, including Mr. Abie Sano, Professor Abebe Shimeles, and Dr. Tewodros Makonnen, explored the implications of currency floatation on Ethiopia’s monetary and fiscal policies, trade, and financial sector. With their in-depth expertise, the panel offered critical insights and actionable recommendations, sparking robust discussions among participants.

As the conference continues, it promises to deliver evidence-driven solutions and strategies for Ethiopia’s economic transformation, setting a blueprint for effective currency management and governance in Africa.
