The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) successfully convened the 5th Annual Workshop of the Consortium of Ethiopian Economics Departments (CEED) on January 10, 2026, at the EEA conference Hall in Addis Ababa. The workshop brought together senior academic leaders from more than 23 universities, including university presidents, college deans, and heads of economics departments, highlighting the growing institutional commitment to strengthening economics education and research across Ethiopia.
The workshop opened with a welcoming address by Professor Tassew Woldehanna, President of the EEA, who emphasized the strategic importance of CEED as a national platform for collaboration among universities. He underscored the role of the consortium in enhancing academic quality, fostering research collaboration, and promoting evidence-based policy dialogue. The sessions were moderated by Professor Mengistu Ketema.
One of the major highlights of the program was the launch of the IMF’s East Africa Regional Economic Outlook, which offered participants timely and evidence-based insights into regional and national macroeconomic developments. This was followed by a focused session on Strengthening CEED, led by Dr. Abule Mehare, which reviewed the consortium’s objectives, clarified the roles and responsibilities of participating institutions, and outlined strategic directions for CEED’s future development.
Subsequently, Professor Mengistu Ketema, CEO of the Ethiopian Economics Association, delivered a presentation on EEA’s Best PhD Dissertation, MSc/MA Thesis, and BSc/BA Essay Awards, highlighting the award procedures and outlining expectations for CEED member institutions. The presentations generated lively and substantive discussions, demonstrating strong engagement from senior university leadership and reinforcing collective commitments to academic excellence, support for emerging scholars, and enhanced coordination among economics departments nationwide.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to further institutionalize CEED as a robust national network for economics departments, anchored by strong leadership engagement and collaborative action. Through competition, Selale University was selected to host the 6th CEED workshop.
