Addis Ababa, February 24, 2025 – The Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), in partnership with Addis Ababa University’s College of Business and Economics, held a deeply moving memorial event today to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Befekadu Degefe, a distinguished economist, founding member of the EEA, and visionary leader in its development.
The event took place at the Eshetu Chole Auditorium, located within the College of Business and Economics. It brought together a wide spectrum of dignitaries, colleagues, family members, former students, and members of the academic community. Among the notable attendees were Dr. Samuel Kifle, President of Addis Ababa University, and Professor Berhanu Nega, Minister, Ministry of Education. Professor Birhanu, offered heartfelt reflections on Dr. Befekadu’s lasting influence on the nation’s intellectual and policy landscape.
The ceremony featured powerful speeches from several esteemed speakers. Professor Tassew Woldehanna, President of the EEA, highlighted Dr. Befekadu’s pivotal role in the founding and growth of the Association. Dr. Atnafu Gebremeskel, Dean of the College of Business and Economics, spoke with deep admiration about Dr. Befekadu’s contributions to higher education and his profound influence as a mentor to generations of economics students.
Attendees fondly remembered Dr. Befekadu’s many achievements, including his leadership in founding the Ethiopian Economic Policy Research Institute (EEPRI), his role as co-editor of the Annual Report on the Ethiopian Economy, his active involvement in the Vision 2020 Forum, and his authorship of influential training and policy materials during Ethiopia’s first Poverty Reduction Strategy Program.
A short video tribute was presented, capturing memorable moments from his unreserved contributions to the Ethiopian EEA. Tributes from Academic Leaders, longtime colleagues, former Students, and family members echoed his unwavering dedication, humility, and brilliance.
The event was also marked by emotional words of gratitude from his family. His beloved wife and lifelong partner, Mrs. Alemtsehay Asfaw, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the organizers and attendees for honoring Dr. Befekadu’s memory with such dignity and warmth. She noted how much this recognition would have meant to him and thanked the EEA and the College for keeping his spirit alive through this celebration of his life and work.
Dr. Befekadu Degefe is remembered not only as a scholar and institution builder but as a compassionate leader who believed in knowledge as a tool for national transformation. His legacy will continue to inspire economists, policymakers, and future generations committed to Ethiopia’s Progress.
